Fused silica Ball and Half-Ball Lens JGS1 Ball
Ball lenses are great optical components for improving signal coupling between fibers, emitters, and detectors. They are also used in endoscopy, bar code scanning, ball pre-forms for aspheric lenses, and sensor applications. Ball lenses are manufactured from a single substrate of glass and can focus or collimate light, depending upon the geometry of the input source. Half-ball lenses are also common and can be interchanged with full ball lenses if the physical constraints of an application require a more compact design.
Fused Silica features high transmission from 200nm to 2.2μm with a low coefficient of thermal expansion, making it ideal for the most demanding ball lens applications in the ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared spectra. Ball lenses are commonly used for improving signal coupling between fibers, emitters, and detectors, as well as objective lenses in endoscopy and bar-code scanning applications. Sapphire features a high index of refraction and excellent broadband transmission characteristics. Ruby half-ball lenses are easier to see and therefore easier to handle for physical applications.
